Five Awesome Storage Tips to Extend the Life of your Tires
If you have been using at least two sets of tires, it’s important to properly store the set you are not using. In terms of tires, taking care of them can go a long way. Proper storage makes your tire last and saves you money. Thus, if your practice has beenhauling your tires around in your vehicle’s trunk or placing them outside, consider the storage tips below:
Clean your Tires before Storing Them
When tires are used, they tend to accumulate dirt, dust and other junks which can damage them when left on the tires. Don’t put your tires into storage without cleaning them. Use soapy water and tire brush to clean them. Once cleaned, allow them to dry completely.
Place them in Airtight Plastic Bags
Consider using garden or lawn bags to put your clean tires into. Before you seal the bags with tape, eliminate as much air as possible from them to prevent the evaporation of the tire compounds’ lubricating oil.
Storage them in an Upright Position
Storing tires in an upright position reduces the stress on them. Avoid stacking your tires too high as they could topple over and sustain some damages. For rim-mounted tires, an upright position may not be necessary. Instead, hang these tires from hooks.
Ensure they are not Exposed to the Sun
Your tires must not be exposed to the sun because being black lets them soak up the heat which could overheat them. Once an overheating takes place, their rubber will break down. In case you have to store them in the outdoors, consider using tire totes to protect your tires from the elements.
Places like a climate-controlled garage and basement are usually ideal for storing tires you want to put away. Don’t store your tires in a standard garage or in an attic or in any place which could be extremely hot, humid, wet or cold.
Drive your Vehicle Once in a While
You may not use your vehicle for a long time so you choose to store them. However, the constant weight on the tires can damage them. This makes it important to take your vehicle out for a drive or move them to relieve the stress on the tires and ensure the rubber compound’s lubrication. When storing your vehicle outside, cover the tires to avoid sun exposure.
